Knowing this might be a touchy issue from a couple of perspectives, I still put in my 5 cts.
I love to fish the Danish coast for seatrout whenever possible from a job/time/family position but...
gill nets for seatrout (even the legal ones) are something beyond my comprehension. It has been proven time and again that the revenues an area receives from sportfishermen is anywhere from 10 times (and up) the money commercial fishermen are fetching for their catches. So there is no sense in this occupation from a macro economic point of view. We are looking at a couple of people getting fish for the market and some cash for themselves putting off potential fishing tourists.
I work the fish industry and the need for wildcaught salmonids from European waters (including the baltic) is very limited if existing.
US Pacific salmon being a different story alltogether. Europeans could learn a lot from the way the Alaskan salmon (and Pollock stocks for that matter) are managed.

Morten, I am not proud to report to the authorities but when it needs to be done about illegal nets causing a problem with spawning fish and people who use the beach. why not use the means that it is set up for. The other solution would be to wait and see if the persons turn up to empty the nets and face them face to face and get in to a heated discussion, I have no time and i do not wish to do that.

Yes i agree Sport fishing and commercial would be the way to go. I have no problem with people who want to purchase there licence to have a small net for there personal use to catch crabs and place the net at the correct distance from shore in order not to interfere with other people using the beach for fishing or bathing.

Steve

Actually that site is nothing to be proud off, it encourage Danes to turn other citizens into the authorities if fishing with illegal or unmarked fishing nets. It would be better if Fishing in Denmark was divided into Sport fishing only, and Comercial fishing. I have heard that in Canada you have divided the fish spieces into some regarded as sport fishes, and some as Commercial spieces???

Morten.

PS. Great videos on the fishingwithrod site, is that Tryggevaelle river?? I fished there as a kid sometimes, dreaming about BC while working my cheap heawy Shakespeare glassfiber rod ;) (but didn't catch any sea runs) .

Rodney.. Well the unmarked nets - you walk into without knowing. The marked nets with a little homemade black flag you can avoid to step in them but they are way too close to shore to be legal.

Martin
nice podcast, interesting point on the hook keeper, I started building my rods a few years ago without the hook keeper, because I didn't like that it interfered with the line during casting. I just started doing the thing you were talking about without giving it any thought about keeping the leader out of the tip top.
nice point.

There is no need to spend money on special materials. In UK supermarkets we buy onions and oranges in plastic net bags. Pull them apart. The thin orange and red strips of plastic netting provide the perfect ribbing and bound heads, especially if overlaid with thin silver wire and then superglued. Believe me this is a killer pattern all year round. Just wrap round to finish and make a full plastic head. No need for cheeks. the trout are not that smart!

Appologies accepted, no Danish-Slovak war declared.
Anyway, gr8 podcast, good sound quality, hopefully you´ll add some "moving pictures" in future.

Steve, so that's your excuse for not catching any fish eh?

Too bad about the nets. What's the difference between unmarked illegal nets and marked legal nets in Denmark? As I understand, licenses for marked nets are available for ordinary citizens there?

Vanuz,

OK, Slovakia then! Sorry, sorry, sorry! I had a hard time remembering all these strange Eastern European countries... They keep on changing borders and names Czechoslovakia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Durkidurkistan, Croatia, Boznia.. duh?

Sorry!

Martin

Some1 here has just asked for a punishment..... c´mon Martin, czechoslovakia? you do not mean it, do you? :))))

Hi,

Mostly I fish it classic upsteam, and sometimes close with just the leader touching the water. I allso strip it in like you described, but the two Browns took the Zonker in a dead drift, just like in nymph fishing.

The river I fish in is quite small, and slow running compared to "swedish standards" Its my way getting down in the holes where the Sea runs are hiding during the daytime, especially when the river runs high. Also it is convenient using a fly that fishes equally god, no matter if fished up, down and accross or downstream. Have you used upstream Zonkers on Sea runs(Havsörring)

Les,

Would you like to buy my tried, tested and well broken in Fenwick HMG AV?
You've seen it in action...
Offers?

Recognising all the caveats about recomending rods for other people, is anyone prepared to advise on "what works for them"? Sage is out of my range - [u:b0a8d3c952]too [/u:b0a8d3c952]fast (usually) and too expensive. I'd fancy a Scierra but am unsure what weight to go for (4/5 or 5/6?? I'd presume the 5/6)and which model in my mid-price range (round the 200 pounds mark). Anyone care to venture an opinion?

Les,

You could also try a custom made rod instead of the well known brands. Ik got myself a custom made 3/4 from the USA for the little streams but they also make heavier rods. I used to own a 'brand-rod' but since i have the custom i wouldn't want anything else. Check out RDPflyrods. And with the current dollar value it can be very low priced as well. Good luck!

Hi Feriden,

Basically, I use small flies for Danish sea trout. I never use the Magnus or own any of those varied patterns.
The standard size of hook I use is a size 10 but in Autumn I tend to use smaller 12's and 14's. I have always used small flies and see no need for anything larger than a 8 but I have seen some use a size 2. Slight over-kill in my books.
95% of my fly box is based on small shrimp / scud patterns. I like to use natural imitations like: http://www.globalflyfisher.com/patterns/oeddshrimp/

I have a few of these: http://www.globalflyfisher.com/patterns/epoxy_miracle/ tied on small size 10 and 12 hooks.

However the remaining 5% of my patterns are good old British wet flies. My favourite by far is the Teal , blue and silver: http://www.globalflyfisher.com/patterns/bergman/

I can't say this enough but don't worry to much about fly patterns. I have caught sea trout on everything. It's more the movement through the water.
Most anglers I know, familiar to Danish salt use 2 or 3 of the same patterns as a religion.

Stay small, simple and natural.

Thanks for the info. One question: You stated you wanted to fill the gap between your 7 and 9 weight RPLXi rods. I am looking for a rod with the kind of feel/action of my old RPLXi 8 wt. How did this Ticr compare with the RPLxi? Thanks

I think a #5/6 weight rod is good for allround purpose fishing in big rivers and light saltwater.
An example: Scierra HM3 rod ( 3 pcs.) 9 ft #5/6 can fill your dreams
(I am using the same rod in #7/8 since a few months here in Stavanger (Norway) Coasts and i am really happy with it.)
The price is good for the quality ! not too expensive and not too cheap. Buy this rod (Rec. weight 11 gr) and you can choose between floating 6 weight or 5 weight double taper line.

Dear Ripley, what kind of flies are you using with your 5 weight rod at the Danish coasts for seatrout? an example: with a Mallard or Polar Magnus in big sizes must be difficult or not?

[b:99936ff559]@Jonathan:[/b:99936ff559]
I am using for Seatrouts, Pollacks ([i:99936ff559]Pollachius pollachius[/i:99936ff559]) and sometimes for Torsks ([i:99936ff559]Gadus morhua[/i:99936ff559]) here in Stavanger coasts:
SCIERRA HMS Scandinavian Saltwater rod in 9'3 ft, # 7/8 , 3-pcs with a Traxion 7/9 Reel. (This is my favorite equipment)

I am not using Shooting Heads anymore > too much work for me
GUIDELINE Pounch Pro is now my favorite floating line at the coasts. But be careful: they wrote on the original flyline packs 32 Meters and its not true ! I got them in 29 meters and one of them was only 26 meters  But 25 meters are long enough for my mission

I am using STROFT GTM 0,25 mm in 8 ft.

Feridun

Can I come in with a request for help on this topic?

This year my wife, Nan, offered to buy me a new rod for my birthday. I fancied a 9foot #5 to use at the GFF Summit so looked through the catalogues and settled on a Vision 3Zone six-piece. Described as "medium fast/mid tip" I thought it would be just the ticket for fishing and travelling. Wrong!
I tried it and quickly put it away at the summit, to be investigated further back home in UK. Tried it today on a small lake fishery, and it handles like a wet noodle! It feels very much "over-lined" and seemed happier with half a DT4F line. Does anyone else have experience of this rod? Have I just got the duff one in the bunch or is this typical?

Anyhow, I've complained to the seller, and we are getting somewhere but not too far yet.

I like the "hot head" on the fly, it adds that extra touch for murky waters.

since I'm a part of the new school, if that's an ok expression i fish the zonker type of flies quite much. Main method in moving water is to fish upstreams and then fish the fly home a tiny bit faster than the current. Work's a treat.

Do you fish it static upstreams or more like in front of your feet style?

i have probabaly left my research a little late i am traveling the tuscany region for the next about ten days and have my rod with me and i am keen to get out for a flick i am on a budget on this trip so cant really justify a guide but would like to know of a river in tuscany i can get a reasonable days fishing on.
I am on my overseas experience from nz and living london has me missing my fishing so any opportunity would be appreciated

hi martin..
thanx for the time.
my mistake,, what i meant was what are the basic tools needed, making a flyfishing rod.so that i can buy them one at a time.cheers ; )

Jim,

I will answer on behalf of Harry. I'm sure he cannot send you the "basic tools". Some of the tools used by bamboo rod builders are very specialised and expensive. You will need to find those locally or craft your own, which is possible with many of the speciual tools needed.

Martin

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
